A heirloom English barley variety with a rich, biscuity malt character and warm gold colour that is the defining flavour in English beers.

Finest Pale Ale Maris Otter is produced from the Maris Otter barley variety, a heritage cultivar developed in the 1960s that has become the undisputed benchmark base malt of English brewing tradition. Where most modern barley varieties have been bred for yield and growth performance, Maris Otter has been retained for one reason: the quality of the malt it produces is simply excellent.

The result is a warm golden malt with a rich, biscuity depth and a full-bodied, slightly toasty character that gives beers a robust yet balanced malt presence. Compared to Golden Promise, Maris Otter is bolder and more pronounced, trading the clean honey sweetness of the Scottish variety for the classic bready, biscuit notes that British ales are known for. Against a standard pale ale malt it offers a noticeably fuller mouthfeel and greater malt complexity, with a slightly fuller finish that suits styles where malt character does the heavy lifting.

This is the malt of choice when making traditional English styles as well as dark beers where a rich and complex malt flavour is required to stand up to the bold flavours of roasted and crystal malts.

Suggested usage: Bitter, ESB, Pale Ale, Porter, Traditional IPA, and any recipe where an authentic, malt-forward British character is the goal. Suitable as up to 100% of the grain bill.
