Oxygen free liquid dosing device for adding finings, flowable hop extracts and more through a ball lock post.

Opening the lid of a keg or FermZilla to add something lets in oxygen, which is what we try to keep out of finished beer. The Ball Lock Doser avoids that. It’s a syringe fitted to a ball lock disconnect, so you can inject liquids straight through the ball lock post without opening the vessel. Because this system uses a gas ball lock disconnect it will work on both liquid or gas ball lock posts. We recommend sucking some beer into the syringe to mix it before injecting it into the gas port.

We put this bundle together because its something we've been using for years that people often ask about.

Uses:

  • Finings such as gelatine, Biofine or other liquid finings
  • Hop extracts, hop oils and dry hop tinctures
  • Flavourings and spirit essences
  • Priming sugar solution for natural carbonation in the keg
  • Acid or salt solutions for last-minute adjustments
  • Yeast or nutrient for a stalled ferment

Instructions:

  1. Drop the pressure in the vessel to a few PSI so you’re not pushing against full serving pressure. We have used up to 10psi without issues however to minimise risk of the tube blowing off the syringe we would opt for 5psi or lower.
  2. Draw your liquid into the syringe.
  3. Point the tip up and push out any air bubbles before connecting.
  4. Click the disconnect onto the post and slowly depress the plunger.
  5. Disconnect, top the vessel back up with CO₂ and gently rock it to mix if needed.

Nothing that involves adding a liquid is completely oxygen free. A small amount of air can sit in the syringe and inside the ball lock post, and the liquid you add carries some dissolved oxygen of its own. Clearing the bubbles before you connect and using freshly boiled and cooled liquids where possible keeps that pickup to a minimum. Either way, it’s a big improvement from cracking the lid.
