A heirloom Scottish barley variety with a sweet, clean malt character and a light golden hue that has stood the test of time.

Finest Pale Ale Golden Promise® is produced from the Golden Promise barley variety, a heritage cultivar dating to the 1960s that has long been Scotland's answer to Maris Otter. Where Maris Otter is the benchmark base malt of English brewing tradition, Golden Promise occupies the same role in the north. This barely variety brings a unique rich biscuit character that most modern barley varieties struggle to replicate.

The result is a pale golden malt with a sweet, rounded character and a touch of honey sweetness. Compared to Maris Otter, Golden Promise is cleaner and more delicate, with a refined sweetness in place of the classic Maris biscuit notes. Against a standard pale ale malt it offers noticeably more depth and body, while remaining light enough in colour to work across essentially all styles.

Simpsons owns the Golden Promise variety outright, supplies seed through their agricultural division MSP, and purchases barley direct from trusted growers each year. This means full paddock to pint traceability and sustainability data is available on every batch.

Suggested usage: Pale Ale, IPA, Bitter, Scotch Ale, Scottish Heavy, and any recipe where a smooth, flavourful malt backbone with heritage character is the goal. Suitable as up to 100% of the grain bill.
