Commercial Beer Clones from Extract

Often before home brewers start to get creative and mess around with crafting their own delicious recipes they want to brew beers that are familiar to them. Commercial clones are a great place to start and learn the difference that each of the individual ingredients make from hops, yeast, and malt extracts on the finish of the final beer.

We have done our best to keep our recipes here as simple as possible and easy to read. If you have any questions or need assistance don't hesitate to give us a ring or flick us a message.

Instructions:

  1. Sanitise fermenter and other brewing equipment used on brew day before beginning.
  2. Sit the liquid malt extract in warm water to soften contents for 10 minutes then add the contents of the extract can to the sanitised fermenter.
  3. Bring 2 litres of water to a boil in a small pot on the stove. Add your brew booster/kit converter/extra consumables to this water and gently simmer for 10 minutes. This process extracts flavour from hops as well as delivers some bitterness to your beer. if you're commercial clone includes any extra boil hops make sure to add them to this liquid and simmer them for 10 minutes too. After 10 minutes add this liquid to your fermenter; we highly recommend using a fine strainer to remove hop or grain degree that may be added at this point to avoid it getting into your fermenter. Ensure all malts used in your recipe have made it into the fermenter by this stage.
  4. Mix vigorously to ensure all malt extracts are dissolved.
  5. Top up to 23 litres with cold water if your recipe includes a lager yeast or cool water if it includes an ale yeast.
  6. Ensure your wort is at the right temperature before adding yeast. Generally lagers will ferment happily between 10 - 15 celsius. Ales will typically ferment between 18 - 22 celsius. Sprinkle your yeast evenly across the surface of your wort and put the lid on your fermenter.
  7. If your recipe includes dry hops then add the hops to a sanitised hop bag and add them directly to your fermenting wort halfway through fermentation (around day 3 of fermenting). When using hop bags ensure to tie them loosely to allow maximum hop-beer contact and plenty of flavour extraction. Failing to do so will make your beers hop flavour and aroma underwhelming.
  8. Ferment until your final gravity is stable then proceed to bottle or keg as per usual.
