Nutmeg Whole
A sweet and earthy spice that adds a spicy sweetness to gins.
Nutmeg is a fairly potent spice which adds a sweet spice and lingering heat when used as a gin botanical. Nutmeg is a good addition for herbal or traditional gins that need more of a balanced character added to them. Typically nutmeg will act as a background flavour and won't be used to the point that it becomes the main character in a gin as it quickly becomes overpowering and too intense.
NutmegĀ can also be usedĀ in ginger beers or beers. The use of cardamon among other spices can be used to create 'chai latte' stouts or spiced beers in general. Nutmeg is very potent so ensure to use sparingly; you can always add more flavour but you can't take it away.
Dosage:
NutmegĀ can be quiet overpowering if used in high doses. To add a mild balanced flavour use 0.1-0.3 grams per litre. We recommend startling lower and titrating up if the flavour is not pronounced enough.
In beers with a lot of character such as a milk stout or dessert stout add 10 - 15 grams and soak in secondary until desired flavour is achieved. In beers with a milder flavour use 5 - 10 grams and also soak after fermentation until desired flavour is achieved. Ensure the bark is boiled or soaked in vodka to sanitise before adding to secondary.
Storage:
Our Nutmeg is packed into resealable foil bags to eliminate UV damage, ensure they are kept sealed and so you can reseal these bags after opening. We recommend refrigerating after opening and using the within two years of opening. Try to keep these out of a moist environment too.
